South Fentress Elementary is located between the Clarkrange and Grimsley communities, and replaced two older buildings that were deficient in meeting the needs of modern educational practices. In addition to creating a better learning environment for the children, this new school has helped to renew community identity and price.

Because of the building's role as a center for community activities, spaces commonly used for after-hours activities can be accessed without the public having access to the classroom portions of the building. Special attention was given to daylight and views from the cafeteria, to make meal times a pleasant time for the children. The cafeteria is often used for public events, and it is located on the front of the building to make it easy for visitors to find their way to these events.

Designed for 750 students, plus designed-in future expansion, the building houses K-8 grades in three wings (K-1-2, 3-4-5, 6-7-8). Shared spaces, such as music room and library, are centrally located. Each classroom wing is specific to the needs of that age group. For example, the 6-7-8th grade wing includes a dedicated science lab plus a computer lab. The 3-4-5th grade wing includes a computer lab and more classroom space to accommodate a lower student to teacher ratio. The K-1-2nd grade wing includes a computer lab and a playroom. The playroom is "hardened" to offer better protection against dangerous weather.
